Hot Bagels–N–More Earns a Standing Ovation

Strolling down the aisle past the tempting array of salads and spreads, and viewing the extensive menu on the wall, it occurs to me that the name of this cheerful little establishment is actually a misnomer. Perhaps it should be called “Hot Bagels–N–Much, Much More.” Much more as in paninis, gourmet wraps, breakfast sandwiches, omelettes, gourmet side salads, and burgers and sandwiches from the grill.

Spotlessly clean and seating about 20 patrons, the shop boasts a dazzling display of cream cheese spreads and all types of salads, many made in-house by co-owner Brian Klein, all artistically laid out in colorful faux Mexican pottery.

A young man who takes great pride in his work, Klein emphasizes the fact that the steady stream of customers ensures a quick turnover in the salads and spreads, guaranteeing freshness.

As a teenager, Klein worked at Hot Bagels Abroad in Clifton—the flagship store. After 10 years, owner Anthony DiMarco entrusted him with a partnership in the new Verona location. And although it means rising each morning at 4:30am to open the shop, Klein clearly relishes his job.

“We open for breakfast at 6:30am, and it’s nonstop until we close at 6pm, but it’s really fun,” he enthuses. One of the rewards, he says, is how quickly Hot Bagels–N–More has attracted a loyal following of repeat customers.

As for customer favorites, he rates the tuna and chicken salads high, as well as the “Italiano” panini, made with grilled chicken, roasted peppers, mozzarella, and pesto, and the “Delightful” panini—smoked turkey with Swiss, slaw, and honey mustard.
And let’s not forget the bagels, once an ethnic staple and now a fixture on every brunch table. The simple varieties from years ago have exploded into more than a dozen types, from marble rye and sundried tomato to oat bran and even blueberry.

For an outstanding flavor sensation, try the scrumptious French toast bagel (hmm…butter, cream cheese, or syrup?). “It’s one of our specialty bagels,” says Klein.

A staunch supporter of local organizations, Klein offers discounts to schools and remembers his customers with token gifts on Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and New Year’s Day.

And he is quick to give a shout-out to his staff.  “I really want to commend them—they’re young, they’re fun, and they’re on the ball. When they see steady customers getting out of their cars, they’ll have their coffee ready, just as they like it, before they walk in the door.”

Klein’s talent is best expressed by customer Irwin Stromeyer, a board member at Verona’s Claridge House and chairman of the pool committee. “Brian recently catered an event for us,” he relates, “and he went out of his way to please people.” Stromeyer raves that the presentation was beautiful, the service impeccable, and at the end, “Brian received a standing ovation from 150 people.”

Open 365 days a year, Hot Bagels–N–More is definitely worth a visit… and don’t forget that French toast bagel!
