A Piece of Essex County History
By Stefanie Jackowitz Published: 01/27/2010
Travel back in time—and stay organized, too—with the Caldwell Public Library’s unique 2010 calendar. Complete with 13 black-and-white images of Caldwell, donated by the family of late township resident and photographer Gene Collerd, the calendar captures the spirit of the town and its landmarks from the Victorian era through the 20th century. Photos from Collerd’s personal collection as well as selections of his own work are featured in the calendar, which includes snapshots of Bloomfield Avenue, Konner Chevrolet, and Grover Cleveland’s birthplace.
“The calendar is reminiscent of another time in this area of Essex County,” says Karen Kleppe Lembo, director of the Caldwell Public Library. “When you look at the photographs, they show Caldwell’s history. They are truly iconic.”
Kleppe Lembo and the library are now in possession of Collerd’s entire photo collection, which includes thousands of snapshots of Essex County.
The calendar is on sale for $15 at The Caldwell Public Library, 268 Bloomfield Ave., Caldwell. Proceeds will help fund library advancements, including enhancements to the Collerd photo collection archives. Plans for additional calendars and notecard sets are in the works.
